Troy Talk - September 2024

Writer's picture: TroyTalkTroyTalk

September isn’t just about back-to-school and fall leaves; it’s also filled with some delightfully odd holidays that give us a reason to smile (or scratch our heads)

Here are a few  favorites:

  • September 9 - National Teddy Bear Day: Finally, a socially acceptable day to bring your childhood teddy bear to work. Or, for the brave among us, to meetings. Snuggle up and enjoy!

  • September 13 - International Chocolate Day: It's the one day a year you can eat chocolate for breakfast, lunch, and dinner without judgment. After all, it's international—other countries are doing it too!

  • September 19 - International Talk Like a Pirate Day: Ahoy, mateys! Brush up on your pirate lingo and confuse your friends by ordering your coffee like a true buccaneer. “A tall latte, ye scallywag, and make it snappy!”

  • September 25 - National Comic Book Day: Dust off your cape and dive into a world where everyone is super. Remember, in comic book world, spandex is always a good idea.

  • September 28 - Ask a Stupid Question Day: No question is too silly on this day! “If tomatoes are fruit, does that make ketchup a smoothie?” Yep, this is your day to shine.

  • September 29 - National Coffee Day: The most sacred of all days for those who need caffeine to function (a.k.a. most of us). Celebrate with a cup (or several) and take a moment to thank the universe for this liquid magic.

Laughing Through September’s Past With Some Highlights

September 8, 1966: "Star Trek" Premieres going where no man (or TV series) had gone before, "Star Trek" first aired on this day, introducing us to Spock's legendary eyebrow raise and more space drama than a cosmic soap opera. If only they had beamed up a better budget for special effects!

September 19, 1982: "Emoticons" were invented by Scott Fahlman, a computer scientist, who proposed the use of :-) and :-( to convey emotions in digital text. Little did he know, he was paving the way for millions of overused smiley faces and for parents everywhere to misunderstand "LOL" in family group chats.

September 30, 1960: "The Flintstones" Airs! The modern Stone Age family hit the airwaves, bringing prehistoric humor, rock puns, and the ultimate debate: Who really invented the foot-powered car? Fred or Barney?

September 18, 1970:  Jimi Hendrix Plays His Last Concert. The legendary guitarist left the world too soon, but his hair and fashion choices continue to live on. And let's not forget, without Hendrix, guitar solos would be about 30 minutes shorter.
